Things to do on the long weekend article

An extra day of the weekend? Yes, please! With Human Rights Day falling on a Monday this year, it’s the perfect opportunity to take advantage of what our beautiful country has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a slow meander or a heart-thumping adventure, there is something for everyone.

Why not start planning now? Here are some of our personal favourites:

Head for the hills

The Magaliesberg is a popular weekend haunt for Joburgers and Pretorians alike. Its hills, valleys, and rivers are a hiker’s dream, while the local dining options will bring any foodie joy. Canopy tours offer a bird’s eye view of the world for those who fancy heights, and beer aficionados will enjoy exploring the many micro-breweries.

Make magic in Magoebaskloof

Looking for somewhere shrouded in ‘mist’-ery? Yes? Then Magoebaskloof is for you. Best known for its indigenous forest covered in its famous ‘silver mist’, it is the nature-lovers paradise.

Drop a line in Dullies

There’s no place better for trout fishing than Dullstroom. Why not pack your rod and cooler and make a weekend of it? (No drinking and driving though!)

Pop up Ponte Tower

The Ponte Tower in Berea is, at 173m, the tallest residential building in Africa. It consists of a hollow sphere surrounded by flats, most of which have been refurbished to their old-school charm. Take in uninterrupted views of Jozi when you take a tour of this historically rich landmark.

Mingle with meerkats at Peace of Eden

Mandy Young, an eco-therapist, and Grant McIlrath, a conservationist and meerkat expert from Peace of Eden, take visitors on the excursion of a lifetime. The experience spans three days where you’ll learn all there is to know about meerkats while observing them in the wild.

Ballsy enough to bungee?

If you’ve got the guts, head on down to the Soweto Towers for a jump. The two decommissioned cooling towers, adorned with Soweto street art, are joined together with a suspension bridge. This bridge is where the brave take the 100m plunge.

Nottingham Road

Like it laid back? Good food, good drink, good time? If that sounds right up your alley, then go make the most of the Midlands this long weekend. Nottingham Road, in particular, is home to many quaint restaurants and pubs and is the ideal spot to kick back and relax to live music with some mates.

Still short on ideas? We didn’t think so! Don’t forget to have your car battery checked before you head out though – you don’t need a flat battery killing your long weekend vibes!
